Sly & the Family Stone @ BB King's, NYC

The Legend mingles with fans in Manhattan

NYC, Dec 7, 2007 - The last show was the best one out of his four total BB King appearances this winter!!

I had a good spot near the stage and exit where Sly came out into the audience and noticed Chris Rock and writer Nelson George talking in a booth behind me. They were both gracious enough to allow me to photograph 'em. Class acts!

Sly stopped at Chris Rock's table while singing...and many apologies to the cute, dancin' blonde I shoved in order to get next to him... :-)

The mc said at least four times "absolutely no video equipment and photos," but I was next to an Asian couple videotaping and I had my Nikon Coolpix L15; in fact, it looked like Fourth of July fireworks when the Legend walked out on the floor, so many flashes were popping!

The first show was excellent the first half an hour when Sly was there, but unfortunately left the stage afterwards, singing off-stage in some cases.

The second show was the bomb, and was being recorded for either a CD or a DVD release. Yeah, Sly did not disappoint, as he and the band were in great form, staying on stage (and the floor with his party-hardy fans) for most of the 70-or-so minute show.

The late night set included: Sing a Simple Song, If You Want Me to Stay, Family Affair, Sex Machine, Thank You (Falettinme Be Mice Elf), Hot Fun in the Summertime, I Want to Take You Higher, Everyday People, Stand, Somebody’s Watching You (Lisa Stone)

So glad I ran into Sly's biggest fans and their wives, Ed and GTO Joe, and we had a blast backstage with sax player Jerry Martini and trumpeter Cynthia Robinson. Earlier that day I parked in Jersey to save $$$ thinking the freakin' subway ran 24/7, but after chattin' it up with friends and musicians until 2:30 am, I discovered the Path train to New Jersey was closed and I forked out $50 bucks for a cab from Manhattan to my parked vehicle in Hoboken. Nevertheless, 270 miles later I was greeted by a beautiful dawn blanketing the DC area... any sacrifice to catch a living legend in action!

What a day! What a night!
